NEW YEAR'S EVE

Six months ago today Jenny Nicholl set out from her home in Richmond, North Yorkshire. She told her parents she did not expect to be home that night.
That evening, Thursday 30 June, 2005, was the last time her parents saw the 19-year-old shop-worker.
They reported her missing on 4 July, the day her white Rover 214i was found at the Holly Hill Inn on the south-western outskirts of Richmond. A large-scale Missing From Home enquiry was launched.
On 3 November Detective Inspector Pete Martin announced that the investigation had become a Murder Enquiry.
A dedicated enquiry team is still working out of Richmond Police Station, backed up by specialist search teams who continue combing rural areas around Richmond. The investigation team is concentrating on building up a picture of the days leading up to 4 July, especially focusing on the people Jenny was with, as well as continuing enquiries in and around the town.
DI Martin said: “We are still investigating this case with vigour and determination, and we will continue to do so.
“Someone knows where Jenny Nicholl is and what has happened to her, and we will find that person or persons. As we go into 2006 the team is still totally committed to resolving this investigation, seeing that justice is done, and ending months of uncertainty and anxiety for Jenny’s family.”
As 2005 draws to a close, we would just like to take this opportunity to thank you all again for the kind words of thought and support via letters, cards, emails, mobile texts, phone calls and comments on the blogspot. They have all meant a great deal to us and help us maintain some strength when reserves are running low. It's good to know that there are so many people out there offering comfort and thinking about us. We appreciate it.

We wish you all a Happy New Year,

Love,

Brian & Ann

DAY AFTER CRIMEWATCH

Teddy may be key to disappearance

A missing teddy bear may hold a vital clue to the whereabouts of 19-year-old Jenny Nicholl, whose disappearance is being treated as a murder inquiry.

Jenny, from Richmond, North Yorkshire, vanished on 30 June, 2005, after leaving home as usual in her Rover.

The vehicle was found on a pub car park on the outskirts of the town on 4 July.

Badges Jenny was taking to a friend to have sewn on to the bear were in the car, but the toy was missing, BBC Crimewatch viewers heard on Tuesday.

Investigating officer Det Insp Pete Martin and Ms Nicholl's mother Ann appeared on the programme with a replica of Ms Nicholl's cuddly bear, which is about 10ins tall and had a smart, military-style outfit.

Det Insp Martin said: "It might be that something as apparently trivial as a toy teddy may jog memories.
"Our most important question is this - where is that teddy bear?"

Ms Nicholl has not been seen since June this year.

He said three options presented themselves - the toy might be with Ms Nicholl; the friend who was going to sew the badges might have it; or the people who know where she is might have it, or might have disposed of it.

Since her disappearance, search teams have combed the moorland and forests around Richmond, particularly to the south west of the town near where her car was left at the Holly Hill pub.

The police are also keen to trace other articles belonging to the teenager, including her grey rucksack and Nokia mobile phone.

Det Insp Martin renewed his appeal for anyone who may have information to contact the police.

The Crimewatch appeal produced a number of "helpful" calls, which are being followed up, a police spokesman said.

CRIMEWATCH AGAIN.

DETECTIVES are hoping that BBC's Crimewatch will help them nail the killer of teenager Jenny Nicholl.
And it is understood that the 19-year-old's mother, Ann Nicholl, will appear on the programme in the hope that someone, somewhere, will be able to solve the mystery of her daughter's disappearance.
It was also revealed last night that a substantial reward has now been put up to try to help solve the riddle which has baffled police for almost six months.
Several of Jenny's treasured possessions are still missing, including an aluminium box she kept her jewellery in and her silver CD/radio/cassette player.
Copies of the items will be shown by the presenters on Tuesday night, in the hope that someone will provide the vital clues to Jenny's whereabouts.
Officers from the Richmond investigation squad will be in the studio to take the calls.
Jenny's story is one the most mysterious cases police in the North have ever investigated and her disappearance has left them baffled.
She was last seen at the family home in Richmond, North Yorkshire, on June 30.
Detective Inspector Pete Martin will appeal on the show for information about the Co-op shop girl's movements between June 30 and July 4, the day she was reported missing.
He said: "As well as ongoing physical searches of rural areas around Richmond, we are concentrating hard on building up a picture of that crucial period - where she went, what she was doing and especially who she was with.
"I believe that someone out there knows where Jenny is and what has happened to her. We have always asked them to call us, or Crimestoppers on (0800) 555111 if they want to remain anonymous, but now there is the extra incentive of a large reward."
The programme will feature security camera footage of Jenny withdrawing cash from a Richmond bank shortly before she disappeared.
Det Insp Martin said: "We need to find Jenny's Nokia 5210 phone, from which spurious texts were sent in July.
"We also want to find the aluminium box Jenny kept in her bedroom to store jewellery and special possessions. We need to find her rucksack, which is grey with black straps, and we need to find her silver CD/radio/cassette player. We are not sure of the make, but it was an inexpensive model.
"This opportunity to appeal nationally for information is important to us. Our hope is that it will bring us the call we need to end months of stress, anxiety and pain."
The reward has been put up by Crimestoppers. It will be given for information leading to the conviction of any person or persons linked to the case.
Police are not revealing the amount of the reward, only that it is large.
The show will be broadcast on BBC1 at 9pm on Tuesday.
Officers will also staff a phone line in Richmond, which can be contacted on (01609) 768111.

CRIMEWATCH

Hi All,

It has been confirmed today that the BBC programme "Crimewatch" is to feature the investigation about Jenny on Tuesday 13th December at 9:00pm.

For those not in the UK, this is a popular national programme, screened about every 3 to 4 weeks. The BBC in conjunction with the Police, appeal for information regarding various crimes etc, on live national TV. Members of the public are encouraged to call in during the 1 hour show and give any information they may have. They also screen any updates about information they receive whilst on air in a 2nd half hour show later that night. It has had some good results in it's long running series, so let's keep our fingers crossed. Ann will be going to London (BBC Television Centre) to make a recorded interview during the Tuesday afternoon, then Detective Inspector Pete Martin (the one some of you will have seen on TV previously) will make the appeal live that night. We don't know how much air time it will get as it depends what other stories they have to cover on the day.

To maximize the coverage locally, we think the Police press office will put out a press release before then, so we hope to get coverage over a couple of days in the local papers.

Some of you will have seen coverage of the ongoing searches and I hope you don't get too spooked by them. The one reported yesterday about a field being cordoned off was nothing of any significance. Something was found late afternoon and it was getting dark so the Police took the precaution and waited until daylight. The searching continues daily and we are kept fully informed so that we don't have too many false alarms.

From Press.

THE hunt for the body of murdered shopworker Jenny Nicholl continued yesterday after searches of a wood drew a blank.
An area of Badgerbeck Wood, on the outskirts of Richmond, North Yorkshire, was cordoned off on Tuesday night.
The country lane past the site was closed and police patrolled the perimeter of the wood.
However, the road was reopened yesterday morning.
A police spokesman said: "I can confirm that nothing of significance was found at this location.
"Searches continue on an almost daily basis as part of the investigation."
Another search of a disused well at Hudswell Grange, on the road between Richmond and Leyburn, took place yesterday.
The site is an abandoned farm on Ministry of Defence land.
The examination was carried out by the marine unit from Northumbria Police. Although the well was covered at the top, officers said it was searched because there was a small gap where something could have been dropped down.
Nothing was found.
It is now more than five months since 19-year-old Jenny was last seen by her parents at her family home in Richmond.
A murder inquiry was launched last month after police said they had no evidence the teenager was still alive.
THERE MIGHT BE A PIECE ON JENNY ON CRIMEWATCH ON TUESDAY 13TH. DECEMBER.
WILL KEEP EVERYONE INFORMED IF THIS IS SO.
YOU CAN LEAVE A MESSAGE BY CLICKING"COMMENTS" UNDERNEATH THIS POSTING.
NIGHT NIGHT EVERYONE.

Hi all,

Not much to tell you all this time and I know I've always tried to remain upbeat and positive, but I can't pretend that Ann and I have had anything other than a harrowing week. We had an update from the senior Police Officers on the investigation and whilst there is still no one 'big' piece of information, Ann and I are very aware of the resources and effort being put into finding out what has happened to Jenny. We also understand that the Police are not always able to inform us of exact nitty gritty detail, for obvious reasons. We are absolutely confident though, that the whole team are fully committed to what they are doing and we thank them for their untiring efforts.

In addition to this, we have talked through the various outcomes with our two Police Family Liaison Officers.... from "Best Case" where Jenny turns up somewhere safe and well....... to " Worst Case" scenario. We have known for a while that this was inevitable and the time was right to deal with it.

Having said all that, we still have hope....... and we are very much continuing to do our own wee things to keep the profile up and assist the Police where we can. We still have local business's etc displaying Jenny's posters and we have friends and family putting them up all around the UK.

Thank you all again, for the kind words of support we receive via the blogspot, email or cards, they are a comfort. It's difficult to reply individually at the moment, as I'm sure you will understand.

Brian & Ann.

NEW PRESS RELEASE

Jenny Murder Investigation - “No Let Up”

“There will be no let up” in the Jenny Nicholl murder enquiry.
Detective Inspector Pete Martin said: “No-one should be in any doubt that North Yorkshire Police are continuing to put the maximum resources, energy and commitment into establishing what has happened to this young woman. There will be no let up.”

Jenny, who would now be 20, was last seen by her parents at their home in Richmond on 30 June. They reported her missing on 4 July, the day her white Rover 214i was found parked at the Holly Hill Inn on the outskirts of Richmond.

On 3 November DI Martin announced that the investigation was being treated as a murder enquiry. He appealed for help from anyone who could help the investigation team piece together Jenny’s movements in the days leading up to 4 July, or anyone who knows where she is. He was anxious to speak with any friend or associate of Jenny’s who may have visited Carlisle on 9 July or Jedburgh on 14 July - text messages were sent from Jenny’s phone in those towns on those days.

Today DI Martin said: “We did receive some calls, and we are following them up, but we are still seeking that key piece of information that will tell us just what has happened to Jenny Nicholl.
“I believe there is someone - almost certainly someone in the Richmond area - who can tell us where Jenny is and what has happened to her. We are following several lines of enquiry to lead us to that person, but in the meantime I need the call that will take me straight to that person.”

Anyone who can help should call the Witness Line on 01423-539334.

Meanwhile Jenny’s family are continuing their imaginative and unflagging efforts to find her. Her mother, Mrs Ann Nicholl, said: “The police have achieved a lot in publicising their appeals for information, and I want to thank the media for their kindness and support with this. But we are also working to the same end, and have come up with some schemes that we have been able to put into effect with the help of family, friends and contacts.”

Some of the Nicholls’ appeals for help have gone out via -
Roman Catholic church magazines
Posters in service stations along the A1, in pubs and shops in Richmond and Catterick Garrison, plus some estate agents in Leyburn, Bedale and Barnard Castle
Friends and family members have also put up posters in Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Dumbarton, Keswick (including campsites) and Liverpool
Bakers Oven shops are putting up notices in all their 66 branches
About 100 shopping malls in England and Scotland have been e-mailed with details and growing numbers are responding positively

DI Martin said: “Ann, Brian and the rest of the Nicholl family and their friends are making an enormous effort to assist this investigation, and they are doing an important job of spreading our appeals to every corner of the country. There is an enormous amount of goodwill towards this investigation, especially from Richmond residents, and it is my hope that someone out there will turn this feeling of support into practical action and phone me with the information we need.”

UPDATE...MID-NOVEMBER

Hi All,

Not a lot to update you all on this time, but I thought after the announcement that the Police gave in the press conference 2 weeks ago, you would all like to know how things are going. Ann and I are still distributing our wee posters and we have had new ones made (better quality) with the blogspot address on it. The investigation goes on, with more resources and detectives assigned from all over North Yorkshire. Since the change of emphasis, more people have come forward with new information over the last week or so. Nothing substantial on it's own, but further down the line, something might just connect to something else.

Some of you may see in the press that the searching continues and in some areas it will intensify. We are kept well informed by the Police about all this regarding the type of search and the reasons why, so please don't be too surprised if and when you see it.

Again, I would like to thank you all for the kind words and thoughts we continue to receive by email, letters, cards or comments on the blog, they are all appreciated and they give us strength and hope.

Tatty Bye for now..... next in 10 - 14 days or so,

Brian & Ann

QUICK UPDATE Re.PRESS

Hi All,

As expected, the media is having a bit of a frenzy at the moment after the press conference. Most of the sensible reporters (and BBC/ITV) covered it with fact, but afterwards, there are some that are trying to make 2 + 2 make 5! I just want to remind you all to take a lot of it with a pinch of salt. Whilst Ann and I have been grateful for the coverage in the early stages, we have always been aware that papers need to sell and when any wee snippet of info was released..... speculation would get worse.

We are coping as best we can. Thanks to everyone that has sent us kind words and support by cards or leaving comments on the website, they are very much appreciated.

PRESS CONFERENCE

Hi all,

I know a number of you read the press articles on the various websites and you will probably find some stuff there on Thursday evening or Friday this week and possibly on TV news.

Up to now, the Police have only issued pre-prepared press releases or given limited statements and it has been done this way to help protect Ann and I from the media. As things have moved up a gear or two, the Chief Superintendent leading the investigation thinks the time is right to hold the first Press Conference, where all aspects of the media will be invited along to listen to a formal overview of what the investigation has been up to. This will take place sometime on Thursday 3 November.

We have obviously known that the other side of the investigation has had to consider that some harm may have come to Jenny. There is nothing to confirm that this is the case, but the Police will, for the first time, indicate that this may be a possible murder inquiry, or that they cannot rule that out. I just want to remind you that we have no information indicating that this is fact, it's just a formal statement of what the investigation has to look at. We don't know what else will be said, so I can't give you anymore at this stage. Not sure either if the mannequin with clothes similar to Jen's will be shown or kept for a future press release.

There will obviously be some speculation within the media and they will undoubtedly ask questions about all sorts of daft things, so please take it all in proportion. At least it may bring forward someone who might know a wee something about where Jenny is or who she may be with, or who she may have been seen with a week or so before she disappeared.

That's it for now,

Brian and Ann

Tues. Nov. 1st.

Hello Everybody,

Ann and I have had a busy time over the last few weeks. The most significant thing we have done was to go out and buy the clothing (or as near as we could get it) that Jenny was wearing on the day she disappeared. We both thought that it may be a bit difficult to do, but that it wouldn't take long to get it. It actually took us the best part of a week to get all the bits and pieces and was more traumatic than we thought!!

We were heartened by the understanding and help we got in the various shops and a lot of the shop assistants knew about Jen. As far as we know, the Police want to dress a mannequin and send photos out with the next press release, though we aren't sure when that's going to be.

The posters I mentioned in my last update have been put up in the bakery/cafe chain "Bakers Oven" and not Greggs like I said. As far as things stand at the moment, the Police are continuing with a long list of ongoing and we know some of these things take time to complete. Additionally, they are going over a lot of old ground, simply rechecking stuff to see if anything new comes up. All the neighbours in the area have been revisited and asked a few more questions. They were given a questionnaire as well. The questionnaires were also given out in pubs over the weekend, as far as we know. Lets hope something comes of it.... it's all the wee small things that might add up into something.
Brian and Ann

UPDATE

Hi all,

Sorry it's been a while for an update, but Ann and I have been busy busy doing our own wee things to help in the Investigation. Our computer was down for 3 days as well, so we're playing catch up.

The publicity we got on Jen's birthday both on TV and newspapers was fantastic. The police got a lot of wee bits and bobs of info when people passing through Market Place seen the large mobile police office there. Nothing (as far as we know) of any great significance, but all the little snippets might eventually add up to something. There was a great deal of good will and of course there still is with the local community.

Ann and I have been putting our posters up in all sorts of places and have been contacting some regional businesses (like Greggs the Bakers) and we are getting fantastic support from most of those with High Street shop windows etc. Greggs for example have agreed to put a poster up in their 66 branches. An old (excuse the pun) friend of mine, Jim Haveron is in the management side of Shopping Malls and he has kindly e-mailed our posters out to about 100 or so shopping centres in Scotland, the North East and North West of England. It would've taken us ages to do that!! Dave and Mo McGonnigle have put some up over Dunbarton way and Ann's sister Mary, who lives in London has also used some contacts to get posters up wide and far. Ann went over to the Lake District last Sunday, where local pubs and shopkeepers already knew about Jenny, so putting posters up was not a problem.

Gotta dash now, will try to keep you up to date about every 2 weeks from now, unless there are any significant developments.
